Tenderness Over Temper

In 40-plus weeks of family home evenings, we experienced the full gamut of patience and frustration, joy and anger. We always learned lessons better and felt a greater sense of love when we were gentle and tender rather than impatient and grumpy. In the April 2007 general conference, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland spoke about how we ought to use our tongues for good. He said, “We must be so careful in speaking to a child. What we say or don’t say, how we say it and when is so very, very important in shaping a child’s view of himself or herself. But it is even more important in shaping that child’s faith in us and their faith in God. Be constructive in your comments to a child—always.”2

The world is not likely to teach our children about God’s plan for families or to have faith in Jesus Christ. Nor can we expect the few hours of instruction received at church on Sundays to provide us with deep, abiding faith. Instruction must happen at home to be truly embedded in our hearts.

As the end of Joshua’s life was approaching, he called all Israel together to remind them of the great things the Lord had done for them. Joshua’s well-known invitation was to “choose you this day whom ye will serve” (Joshua 24:15). We, like Joshua, can call our families together to teach them the Lord’s words and say, as Joshua did, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

Photo illustration by Cary Henrie

Family Night Post

Hey, I've got so many of you I don't know what to say but I've decided to post a family night thought for your comments and discussion, since many of you are far away. I know Mom gets the phone calls each day so that keeps at least some of you in touch but I would also like to take the opportunity to post what we talk about during family night. You may want to join and tell us about yours.

After Kaylie read a story about the effect of seminary on a youth, we spoke about some Ensign articles concerning balance in our lives with all our activities. I was impressed to read that some families because they live some distance apart have family night together over the web and share stories assignments, etc.

So it is born, please share as you feel you can.

The thought for the week is above.

Thought for today

From Joseph Smith's testimony in the Book of Mormon we read

They worked on their music for 2 and 1/2 days with guest conductors from around the United States and pulled off this great concert. We will post music as we get the CD.

Kaylie enjoyed working with Craig Jessop and said that he worked them hard. Some of the kids were complaining that they worked too hard, but they are probably not used to hard work. He pulled of a wonderful concert that had Judy and I inspired by it's finish.

Read and Article in the Oregonian.

Happenings

Well I'll tell you there has been many things going on here lately. We were happy to see McKay and Heather show up, surprise Seth and be with all of us for a week before Seth went into the MTC. We had a good time with them. Our highlight was the Monday night barbeque with Brats, hamburgers, chicken, pork steaks over at the Waterloo campsite park. I still have meat in the freezer.

It was hard to say goodbye to Seth and Nathan - I will miss them terrribly. Nathan was instrumental in helping me with the yard and we got it in good shape for the open house. Seth was very considerate and respectful of all those who came to his "farewell" and open house.

The Bishop said the farewell saw more non-members at a sacrament meeting than he has ever seen. What a complement to Seth and his influence in the community.

It's no secret, Kay has been there.

Well my older girls say it is no secret how much I love Kaylie Bay to the point I play favorites. It has been the best week of my life. THere is nothing better than to be with all of your children and grandchildren. It's been along time since our whole family has been together. We were able to go to St. George Ut. and stay at our condo at Green Valley. What fun, special memories we have had in the past with going and spending time with Grandma Bev. Now, we have some great memories with our granddaughers. The weather was beautiful, and everyday was filled with lots of fun and activities,from volleyball, basketball,tennis,swimming,ridind Jakes motorbike,talks,laughing,crying,going to the temple,minature golfing,girls day shopping and dying hair,boys golfing and making shirts together,easter egg hunt, family pictures....and so the list goes on.I have never been so happy as to be there and spend time with ALL of our FAMILY. I love you sll so much and thank you for sacrificing to get there with your jobs, work. Now of corse the real highlight of the week was when Mckay and Heather announced that they were expecting a baby. I was in shock, because I was so not expecting them to tell me right then. they had a picture of the ultra sound and had it in a frame that said, "our family" I looked at it and said"NO Way!!!!" It was so exciting. I'm so happy for them and they will be awesome parents. My heart is so full of joy right now. I love you all so much. And now to complete this wonderful week with having conference this coming weekend is incredible. I'm looking so forward to feasting apon the words of Christ.And to be fed spiritually. I know you are all excited that I have finally returned to my blog, so hopefully all of you out there in blog land will respong...goodnight, sweet dreams....G'ma judy, Momma

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_QWMJAW_4CnE/R5Vv7aKilNI/AAAAAAAAAKs/-QTwgoXpfdE/s320/Sow+a+thought.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158152014649267410" />

New Medical School in Lebanon

A medical school will be coming to Lebanon. This school is right across the street from the hospital. This should be very exciting for Lebanon as well as Samaritan Health Services.

More info because you all asked.

Samaritan Health Services (SHS) plans to partner with Pomona-based Western University of Health Sciences to develop a college of osteopathic medicine as part of a health sciences campus in Lebanon. The campus will offer a variety of health professions programs in addition to a conference and events center, medical office building, hotel and restaurant complex and other support services.

After months of discussions and multiple site visits, the two organizations have agreed to form a task force to complete a feasibility study and draft the resulting agreements to establish a college of osteopathic medicine as part of a 51-acre campus across from Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. The task force is to complete its work in 2008.

We are really excited.

An English Writer

I know my kids remember us at least talking about Jungle Book, the Disney movie that actually came out in 1967. It was a thriller for me. I recently downloaded the songs from that movie that starred Mowgli and boy raised by wolves. Who could forget about the big bear singing "Bare Necessities". Or even better when the vultures sang, "That's what friends are for". Man was I tingling when they started to sing barbershop style and at the end of the song one "vulture" hit the lowest note I thought anyone could ever hit.

There is something more though that I would like to share with you. Probert comes from Ap Robert, which in england means son of Robert. We are actually from Herefordshire so English roots run deep in our veins. Today I talk about the inspiration for the Jungle Book movie a man that wrote the book named Rudyard Kipling. Although at times he was not real popular in England he had some good friends, like C.S. Lewis, was a conservative sort and predicted the war with Germany for a second time when many were silent as Hitler rose to power.

I was so impressed with his poem "If". My mother made sure I had it, some of you like McKay will remember that it has been quoted by the NFL describing football. So I share it with you, especially the men of the family.

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
Be Gentle and Loving in Deed and in Throught

There is such a simple thing we could do each and every day to increase cooperation, good will and strengthen each other. That is to simply be gentle and loving to each and every one including ourselves. Learn to bridle passions with power and wisdom so you can be filled with his love, gentleness and kindness. Passions turn into destructive forces if allowed. No one wants to be without kindness in the world, so be reminded that not resisting temptation allows the Lord's loving kindness to be lost. Resist Satan in all his forms. Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought.

Our family can be forever, encircled in Eternal love, joys we feel in earthly measure, will be treasured with loved ones above, pray for strength to be found worthy, Father knows and guides with love.

From Coach Mendenhall

ear Parents:

We were pleased to return home with a hard-fought win against New Mexico It was the first time for many of our offensive players to experience the chaotic, multiple blitzing defense of the Lobos. It was difficult, but I was proud of their effort, their resiliency and their heart. All three phases of the game made the plays when they had to. Out special teams has improved tremendously and gives a solid and positive impetus to the team.

We have a welcome bye this week and have discussed four goals we would like to achieve. One is to allow the players to get back to full health. There are a lot of bumps and bruises to heal. We're also trying to recapture our position mastery, focusing on the details of each player's technique The third goal is self scout to gain an understanding of the team's weaknesses and strengths so that we can reach our fourth goal of fine-tuning our execution.

We had a great contingent of fans at the game; a welcome sight and sound for the team. The fireside was also packed and is a real tribute to the young men who participated. It buoys up the players to have these obvious signs of support for their efforts.

We're giving the players Friday, Saturday and Sunday off and will then be back to our regular meeting and practice routine to get ready for UNLV. We hope many of you will be able to join us there for the game and fireside. Thank you for everything you do to support your son and help the program
